Can’t we just go back to the good old days?
Maybe you’ve said something similar as you look at the up-and-coming generation. I’ve been guilty of this too: “Back when I was a kid, things were GREAT because of X, Y, and Z.” It’s funny how we often choose to reminisce about the “good old days” when life seemed simpler, only to face the stark contrast of the world we live in now.
The reality is, the world is no longer a simple place for kids. This generation is more anxious, more addicted, and more biblically illiterate than anything we’ve experienced in our lifetimes. So, the question is: what are we going to do about it?
I am convinced that the best plan of action—despite the seemingly endless strategies—is to trust the words of Jesus when He tells us to abide in Him. Spiritual fruit comes from Him. Transformation comes from Him. Freedom comes from Him. Therefore, our job is to draw close to Christ and live the life of a disciple.
As disciples, we ought to consider what it means to be a great disciple. In reference to the Law of Moses, Jesus says in Matthew 5:19, “Whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.”
Here’s our answer for this generation: to practice His teachings and teach others to do the same. We must teach the up-and-coming generation the commands of God, but we can only truly teach what we ourselves obey. You can’t give what you don’t have, and you can’t raise a disciple if you yourself are not a disciple. This is what will lead us to a generation that can be set free from the vices they find themselves in!
I want to look at this current generation and, instead of wishing for the “good old days” to come back, I want to be able to say: Look at the GREAT days we are living in right now!
Last weekend, we held a Volunteer Training Meeting for all those who work with young people. It was led by Pastor Jenni Colwell, the PAOC Family Ministries Director, and she reminded our team of the importance of family ministries. Here are a few key takeaways:
It was a powerful reminder of the vital role kids’ ministry plays in our church. If we want to see a brighter future, we need to raise up people who shine brightly for Christ. And you have a role in this! The future can be brighter when we let our own lights shine brightly.
So today, be reminded and filled with hope. Abide in Christ, put His teachings into practice, and teach others to do the same. Shine brightly for the sake of these children so they can see what a life lived for Jesus looks like.
God bless you,
Pastor Garrett
